BC’s Powder Highway: Your Road to Epic Winter Fun

Discover the Powder Highway® in beautiful British Columbia’s Columbia Valley where winter adventure abounds.

The Kootenay Rockies, in the southeast corner of beautiful British Columbia (the Columbia Valley), boasts one of the highest concentrations of winter sport opportunities anywhere in the world: backcountry, cross-country, cat, heli, and downhill skiing, plus sledding, tubing, snowshoeing, sightseeing, hiking and much, much more.

Considered the sweet spot for great snow in Western Canada–between the big but wet and heavy snowfalls of the west coast and the dry, bitter cold snows of the Alberta Rockies–we enjoy the legendary deep, dry powder and consistent snowfall of renowned mountain ranges like the Rockies, Selkirks, Purcells, and Monashees.

And the Powder Highway® is the “circular route through [those] Kootenay Rockies that passes by 8 alpine ski resorts, over 20 backcountry lodges, and numerous heli- and cat-ski operators”, which means you can start your journey anywhere along the loop and be guaranteed an amazing winter experience.

Accessed from picturesque towns like our Radium, Invermere, Kimberley, Fernie, Nelson, Rossland, Golden, and Revelstoke, every stop is genuinely a snow sports paradise. (We recommend Radium Hot Springs to start and end your route, where you’ll be able to experience the best in deep Koots powder and tons of fun along with down-home, authentic friendliness, and hospitality.)

Panorama Mountain Resort: The drive from Bighorn Meadows Resort Radium Hot Springs to Panorama Mountain Resort is just a little over half an hour. Located in the heart of the Powder Highway, Panorama Mountain Resort enjoys endless vistas of the Canadian Rockies — towering peaks, snow-covered summits as far as the eye can see. Excellent for skiers of all ages and skills abilities, it provides ample beginner and intermediate terrain as well as plenty of challenge for expert skiers – bowls, trees, and summit routes only accessible by foot. Looking to experience more untouched terrain than the lifts allow? Take in world-class heli-skiing with RK Heli Ski where you can enjoy first tracks for days in epic Kootenay powder.

Fairmont Hot Springs Resort Ski Hill: Fairmont Hot Springs Resort Ski Hill is only 37km south of Radium Hot Springs and is one of the most family-friendly ski areas on the Powder Highway. While not known for the amounts of snow they receive, their uncrowded, impeccably groomed terrain and homey atmosphere make it number one for families and beginning skiers. There’s the popular tube park, and the Resort’s Snow School is one of the best – an expert team that can teach anyone to ski!

The Whiteway: A winter trip to Invermere isn’t complete until you’ve experienced the longest skating trail in the world. While the giant Whiteway isn’t an official stop along the Powder Highway, it’s certainly a great bonus! A mere 15-minutes from Radium Hot Springs, you can skate, cross-country ski (classic and skate-style), or walk the 34km groomed track that circles the lake, connecting the towns of Invermere and Windermere. The world-class facility is meticulously maintained each season thanks to the hard work of the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club.
