LOCAL WILDLIFE

The chance of seeing wildlife in the wild is one of the most exciting reasons for visiting our mountain national parks. However it is important to treat wild animals with the respect they deserve. Approaching them too closely threatens their survival. Once animals become accustomed to being around people, they are in danger of loosing that very thing that makes them special…their wildness. You are in Bear Country! Bears are naturally wary of humans, and generally choose to avoid us. However, Bears may threaten and even attack people when they become accustomed to humans, when they are surprised or feel they are forced to defend their young, themselves or their food. Bears are very intelligent and complex animals. No single strategy will work in all encounters:

  • Stay Calm
  • Pick up children
  • Stay in a group
  • Keep your pack for protection
  • Back away slowly, never run
  • Talk calmly and firmly

Cougars are not often seen, as they are solitary, elusive and active mainly at night. However, we do have cougars here in our valley. Avoid meeting a cougar by traveling in groups and making lots of noise. If you encounter a cougar:

  • Keep your children close/pick them up
  • Free roaming pets may attract cougars
  • Face the animal and retreat slowly – DO NOT run or play dead
  • Try to appear larger by holding your arms over your head
  • BE AGGRESSIVE – Shout, wave a stick or throw things at the animal

Elk are dangerous, no matter when or where you see them. Give them the right of way at all times and stay at least 100 feet away from them. They may appear pretty tame but they are wild and need to feed, rest, mate and bear young undisturbed, to survive. If these needs are not met, survival is threatened and the likelihood of attack is higher. Mid May to the end of June is calving season and the cow elk is particularly dangerous. The bull is most aggressive Mid September – October during mating season.

BIGHORN SHEEP

Description

This muscular bodied animal is covered with a brown coat, the belly, rump, back of legs, muzzle and eye patch are white. The most distinct feature of the mature male is a set of massive horns which spiral backwards from the top of the head. The hooves are hard on the outside and soft on the inside making it an excellent climber and jumper.

Distribution

The California bighorn resides in alpine meadows and foothills near rocky cliffs in the Okanagan, Simikameen and south Chilcotin regions. Most sheep ranges are within easy reach of cliffs with avalanche chutes and talus slopes with they use to escape from predators.

Biology

This sheep tends to be a grazing animal and feed on grasses such as wheatgrass, bluegrass and junegrass. The rutting season is from mid-September to late October. During this time, the males have butting contests where they may reach one another at speeds of 50-70 miles per hour and an estimated force of 2400 pounds. The maximum life span is 16-18 years but the average is about 7-9 years. Most die during the winter from cold, predation or disease due to malnutrition. The bighorn has always been prized for their meat; the horns were used by Natives to make powerful bows and are still prized by hunters and trophies.

Tracks

The track of the bighorn sheep has a straighter edge and is less pointed than that of the deer with a blockier shape and small hollow on the inside of the hoof. Straddle: 17-0 cm (6.8 – 8 in) Stride: 45 – 58 cm (18 – 23.2 in) Track: 7.5 cm (3in) long / 5 cm (2 in) wide.
